Colorado Residents Fight Uranium Mine
"NUNN, Colo. (AP) — Jean Hediger can stand at the edge of her organic wheat farm and look west to the Rockies, east toward this speck-in-the-road town and straight ahead into what she sees as her worst nightmare. A Canadian company's plans to establish a uranium mine just across the two-lane county road from Hediger's farm has triggered a bitter tug-of-war with residents of this fast-growing region about 70 miles north of Denver who fear the risk of contaminated water and other health problems."

"How do you farm organically next to a uranium mine?" Hediger asks.

The Leadville tunnel drainage problem and the threat of an imminent disaster has been a hot topic of discussion lately in Salida. Being downriver from the problem we would be affected by the release of any contaminated water. Fishing on the Arkansas River could be wiped out for a long time. Representative Lamborn's johnny come lately letter to the President was a cynical reaction to the widespread criticism he received for staying in his office in Colorado Springs when Leadville was having a critical meeting to discuss the problem.
" While Colorado Senator Tom Wiens and US Senator Wayne Allard met with federal, state and county officials yesterday to discuss the Leadville Mine de-watering plan, the congressman from the district affected, Doug Lamborn, decided that he’d stay safely in his Colorado Springs office."

But then watching Doug Lamborn in public forums trying to persuade anyone of anything is probably why he stayed at home. It is an election year and for his demonstrating in public his inept abilities only convinces the public that he just as well should stay home or in the office, for all the good he would get accomplished--which ain't much.

I was talking to a friend about this yesterday and some guy overheard us. He said "You all are a bunch of worry worts. Ya gotta have something to ffreak out over. I dont even give it any thought. Im sure theyre gonna fix it."

I asked the guy who 'they' were and he said: "The government. You know theyre gonna do something about it. Theyre not gonna let a catastrophe happen."

REALLY? I said to him "you sure have a lot of faith in the government." He said: "Sure. Theyll fix it and then everyone will have to find something else to freak out over. Im not worried at all."

WOW. Sorry but after the hurrican Katrina debacle I have zero faith in our government being able to fix anything. Thats when I had a horrible thought: What if the gov sics Halliburton on the Leadville dranaige problem? Then the only thing we can be sure of is that it will cost a hundred trillion dollars, take ten years, and nothing will get fixed. (and a bunch of rich people will get even richer)

Yeah Im worried about it. Im not freaked out but Im definitely worried.
